Plot
- The Promise is a family saga that spans four decades. It revolves around the Afrikaner Swarts, a farming family located outside Pretoria. The main character's dying wish was for Salome to be given ownership of the house she worked for. Tensions grow between the siblings as they try to follow through on the promise.
Style and themes
- Galgut's style and narration are similar to that of Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner. Jon Day of The Guardian described her as an "indistinct space" who drifts from one character to another.
- The Swarts family's moral failings have been interpreted as an example of how post-apartheid South Africa still has the promise of white South African's to black South Africans.
Reception
- The Promise by South African author Mara Galgut was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize. She is the third woman from South Africa to win the prestigious award. She was previously nominated twice for the Prize.
- The Promise received positive reviews from critics, with a "Rave" rating from Book Marks. In a review for Harper's magazine, Claire Messud praised Galgut, stating that his work is "uniquely itself" and that the reader's experience is "all but physical."
