Domestic violence | SC notice to Centre on PIL seeking infrastructure facilities for women
- A bench of the Supreme Court on November 8, 2021, asked the Centre to provide adequate infrastructure for providing legal aid to women who were abused in their homes.
- The bench also issued notices to the governments of India and Pakistan on a plea challenging the validity of the National Commission for Women's report.
- The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Centre regarding the steps it would take to provide adequate legal aid to women who were abused in matrimonial homes. It noted that the domestic violence crime rate remained the most common crime against women.
- The court said it would issue notice to the respondents one by one and then put the case in the Central government's basket for monitoring.
- The court was hearing a plea filed by a women's group, which sought adequate infrastructure under the Domestic Violence Act to provide legal aid and shelter homes to women abused in their homes.
Out of the 4.05 lakh cases reported by the National Crime Records Bureau in 2019, over 30 per cent of them were domestic violence cases.
- A bench headed by Chief Justice JS Kejriwall sought response from the government on a plea for adequate infrastructure for providing legal aid to women who were abused in matrimonial homes.
- The bench also issued notices to the Union of India and three other ministries.
- The court said it would issue notices to all the respondents, except the Centre, before the matter is placed in the Central government's basket for monitoring.

- The plea noted that despite the passage of the Domestic Violence Act in 2005, it still remained the most prevalent crime against women in India.
- According to the National Crime Records Bureau, over 30 per cent of the cases referred to as domestic violence were reported in 2019.
